2030 Vision: The Decade Ahead in Media
Synthetic Media

Abstracts

The decade that just drew to a close changed the way we create media in fundamental ways. But a variety of technology vectors suggest the decade ahead may bring more profound disruption. From artificial intelligence and machine learning to 5G networks that will change the ways media is produced, distributed, monetized and consumed, the creative process will evolve rapidly as new tools create new opportunities. Justin Hendrix, Executive Director of NYC Media Lab and the founder of RLab, a new center in Brooklyn focused on virtual production, XR and spatial computing, will explore key technology trends and talk about the implications for people in the business of media and advertising. Attendees will leave with insights to:

  • Cut through the hype: forecast and understand the state of the art in new technologies such as AI, ML, and 5G
  • Design innovation experiments: principles for building an experimental culture primed to take advantage of new technologies in imaging, video, and 3D immersive environments
  • Get creative: lean prototyping and creative practices for next generation workflows
  • Consider the big picture: how will the economics of media change as technologies advance?

At the intersection of computer generated images, video, text and voice lies a potentially divergent future for media. From holographic pop stars to new tools to automate workflows, from deep learning techniques to generate media out of whole cloth to engaging artificially intelligent characters, the creative potential of synthetic, computationally generated media and experiences is enormous. But there are important questions around transparency, trust and privacy that brands and platforms must consider. What is the way forward? ustin Hendrix, Executive Director of NYC Media Lab and the founder of RLab, a new center in Brooklyn focused on virtual production, XR and spatial computing, will take the audience on a tour of synthetic media. Attendees will leave understanding:

  • What is synthetic media, and what technologies are driving innovation? The key technology trends in computationally generated audio, video, text and beyond.
  • How can my company get started? What is a good way to experiment with synthetic media technologies, at low cost?
  • What are the concerns? What are the ethical and privacy questions that we need to address in the industry?
Bio note

Justin Hendrix is the Founder of Rlab, a new center in Brooklyn focused on virtual production, XR and spatial computing. He’s also the Executive Director of NYC Media Lab, a public-private partnership between the City’s industry and its universities to drive emerging media and technology innovation and entrepreneurship. Launched by the New York City Economic Development Corporation, NYC Media Lab collaborates with NYU, Columbia, CUNY, The New School, the School of Visual Arts, and Pratt Institute and corporate members such as Bloomberg, the Associated Press, NBCUniversal, Hearst Corporation, Viacom and Verizon. The Lab’s interests range across disciplines from data science and design to virtual and augmented reality. Its programs include prototyping projects with member companies as well as The Combine, an early stage accelerator that encourages digital media startup formation and technology commercialization on the City’s campuses. Before joining NYC Media Lab, Hendrix was Vice President, Business Development & Innovation for The Economist, where he directed prototyping and commercialization of new digital media business concepts.
