Abstracts

In the 90s, the art market started publishing online and the NY Times arts headlines in 1999 predicted that all types of art would be sold online very soon. 20 years later, the online art market has still not boomed, but other developments in technology pose many existential questions to the structures that underline the art market. How will Web 3.0 disrupt the art world as we know it, and what questions does it raise about the meaning of art itself?

COVID-19 caused all businesses to close their doors, including museums. But searches for virtual exhibitions, virtual museum tours and digital exhibitions grew as people looked to learn and experience arts and culture from their homes. The museum world developed an immediate response to this need, and became a valuable resource for homeschooling, as a trusted online resource for educational content. But what is the future of virtual exhibitions beyond the pandemic panic? What will these structures become and will there be any business models developing from them? This talk explores these questions.

In 2018, Vastari helped curate a full-day conference at Christie’s about blockchain and the art market. 2 years on, the technology still holds a lot of promise for the industry. What has continued to happen in the space of distributed ledgers and the arts beyond the initial crypto-hype?
